Child Find Information
What is Child Find?
Child Find is a process for identifying children who are at-risk or need specialized services. The process is free of charge for the families and is provided through the school district.
Screenings
The first step of the Child Find process is screening your child. A screening is a brief and abbreviated assessment of your child’s development. Screenings will include hearing and vision. Dental Screenings are conducted on our Oral Health Day at the Preschool. The results of a screening can determine whether or not further assessment is needed and in what areas of development. If no further assessments are needed, then the process would end here and you may be given suggestions about how to support your child’s development at home.
Screening options include: Mail-In/Phone Review, Personal Appointment, or Community Screening
Community Screenings are usually in September and February.
Screenings may occur in your child's Preschool classroom (Columbine, Gateway or Summit) or at Woodland Park School District central office.
* All children enrolled in a Woodland Park School District Preschools will be screened: developmental, vision, hearing, and dental.
Evaluations
If further assessments are needed, then your child would be scheduled for an evaluation at our District Office. An evaluation is an in-depth assessment of your child’s strengths and needs in the predetermined areas. An evaluation can take anywhere from one to three hours depending on the specific needs of your child. There will be a minimal of three people in addition to you and your child at the screening. The team will be the you, your child, the Family Bridger, the Early Interventionist (Preschool Teacher), Itinerant(s), and others as needed. After an evaluation, the team will discuss what specific services could benefit your child and determine the next steps. Next steps may involve the development of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or simply a suggestion of ways to support your child at home.

Possible Outcomes
- Your child may qualify for specialized services and may have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) developed. IEP’s are for children with significant delays or disorders and for children who cannot benefit from the general education classroom alone.
- Your child may qualify for the Colorado Preschool Program. This program is designed for children who may need some additional support but whose delays are not significant enough to qualify for an IEP.
- Your child may be within the range of typical development and may not require additional support. In this case, your child may be offered a tuition spot if space allows. Other options may be discussed.
